Meet the administrators

Dean of students

Name: Richard Johnson.

Start date: 2001.

Career: Before coming to KU, Johnson was assistant to the vice chancellor for student affairs at the universities of Missouri and Vermont. Johnson has focused on improving student retention, student development and enhancing diversity. The dean of students is responsible for campus social, cultural and educational life.

Dean of libraries

Name: Stella Bentley.

Start date: 2002.

Career: Bentley oversees KU’s library system, which serves 26,000 students and includes 3.8 million books and 33,000 current serial titles housed in seven library facilities on the Lawrence and Overland Park campuses. Bentley previously was the dean of libraries at Auburn University.

Provost/executive vice chancellor

Name: David Shulenburger

Start date: 1996.

Career: Shulenburger joined the KU business faculty in 1974. He served as vice chancellor for academic affairs from 1993 to 1996. As the chief academic and executive officer for the Lawrence campus, he is responsible for the teaching, research and support functions. Shulenburger previously was a faculty member at Clemson University and a labor economist for the U.S. Department of Labor.

Senior vice provost

Name: Kathleen McCluskey-Fawcett

Start date: 1996.

Career: McCluskey-Fawcett became senior vice provost for academic affairs in 2002 after a year as interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Before that, she was associate provost since 1996. She is chief deputy to the provost and oversees curriculum development and student services. She came to KU in 1985 and has served as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, chair of psychology and associate vice chancellor for academic affairs.

Vice provost for scholarly support

Name: Don Steeples.

Start date: 2003.

Career: A native of Palco, Steeples came to Lawrence in 1975. He has been a distinguished professor of geology since 1993. Steeples oversees policies on space allocation, faculty start-up packages, research administration, environmental health and safety and support for graduate teaching and research assistants. Steeples holds a Ph.D. in geophysics from Stanford.

Vice provost for student success

Name: Marlesa Roney

Start date: 2003

Career: Roney, a native of Concordia and graduate of Kansas State University, comes to KU after serving three years as vice president of student affairs at the University of Akron. She is looking at ways to restructure her division, formerly called “student affairs,” after a study showed areas needed to work more closely together. Among her goals are improving student retention and graduation rates. See story, 16A.

Vice provost for faculty development

Name: Sandra Gautt.

Start date: 1996.

Career: Gautt was assistant provost since 1996 before getting the new title of vice provost in 2002. She oversees faculty and instructional development and works on faculty policy issues. She began teaching in KU’s department of special education beginning in 1990. Before that, she taught at the University of Missouri-Columbia, from which she holds a Ph.D.

Vice provost for information services

Name: Marilu Goodyear.

Start date: 1999.

Career: Goodyear was promoted to her current position after serving as KU’s associate vice chancellor for information services. A native of Independence, Mo., she oversees KU’s information technology infrastructure, including all academic and administrative computing services, the data warehouse, the libraries, networking and telecommunications services and printing services.

Vice provost for research

Name: Robert Barnhill.

Start date: 1997.

Career: Barnhill, a Lawrence native, came to KU from Arizona State University. He coordinates research activity on the Lawrence campus, which has seen record increases the past six years. KU did $243 million in research in fiscal year 2002, ranking it in the top 50 public universities in the growth rate of federal life sciences research funding.

Vice provost for administration and finance

Name: Lindy Eakin.

Start date: 1996.

Career: Eakin’s career at KU began in 1983, when he served as assistant to the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He later worked at the KU School of Medicine campus in Wichita and as director of budget management and fiscal services before becoming associate vice chancellor in 1991.

Vice provost for facilities planning and management

Name: Jim Long.

Start date: 1999.

Career: Long came to KU from Virginia Tech University in 1983 to be director of the Kansas and Burge Unions. He was named associate vice chancellor for student affairs in 1994, before taking his current position in 1999. Before coming to KU, Long worked at Emporia State University and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Executive Vice Chancellors

Executive vice chancellor for University Relations

Name: Janet Murguia.

Start date: 2001.

Career: Murguia earned three degrees from KU, including a doctorate in law. She worked in the White House starting in 1994 and was deputy campaign manager for the Gore presidential campaign. Murguia oversees KU’s public relations, Kansas Public Radio, Audio-Reader Network, Visitor Center, and trademark licensing and governmental affairs offices.

Executive vice chancellor for Kansas University Medical Center

Name: Donald Hagen.

Start date: 1995.

Career: Hagen is chief administrator for KU Medical Center. His medical experience before coming to KU included the position of surgeon general of the U.S. Navy and commanding officer of Bethesda Naval Hospital and the Naval Hospital at Camp Pendleton, Calif.
