Lions respond to loss by splitting at home

A day after suffering a disappointing loss to Free State High, Lawrence High’s boys tennis team bounced back Tuesday to go 1-1 in a double dual.

Lawrence defeated Shawnee Mission West, 3-1, winning all but No. 2 doubles. The Lions fell to Olathe South, 1-3, with senior Scott Elwell the only winner.

“I think we’re playing better,” LHS coach Dick Wedel said. But, “we’ve got a long ways to go.”

As usual, Elwell led the Lions (4-5). Despite a strong wind, he defeated both Olathe South’s Adam Hougland and Shawnee Mission West’s Jason Lee, 8-1.

“Another windy day,” said the Lions’ three-time state qualifier, who next year will play tennis at the University of Iowa. “It kind of threw me off a little when I was serving with the wind. I was hitting a little bit deep.”

But Elwell said he played well overall.

“I was pretty consistent off my ground strokes,” he said.

Wedel also pointed to No. 1 doubles players Galo Salcedo and James Garito as meet standouts.

The two defeated SM West’s Ted Kim and John Leonard, 8-5, and then closely battled Olathe South’s Matt Suddock and Brad Williams before falling, 8-6.

Salcedo and Garito have quick hands and communicated well while trying some new strategies, Wedel said.

It’s hard to convince some of the players that different plays work, Wedel said, laughing, but if nothing else, the concentration required keeps them moving and aware.

Still, he said the team needs to work on its execution.

“I think overall I’ve seen our guys be a little too nice,” Wedel said. “I talk and talk about how if there’s a guy standing at the net, hit it to the other guy. That’s something we really need to work on.”

LHS Saturday will play in the Highland Park Invitational.
