LHS splits twinbill

Lions rally to win, falter in nightcap

With a flair for last-minute theatrics, Lawrence High’s softball team maintained its .500 record Monday, splitting a doubleheader with Olathe South.

The Lions (3-3) won the first game, 4-3, in the seventh inning, but lost the rematch, 6-2, despite a late rally.

“I told them the same thing I told them last time,” coach Reenie Stogsdill said. “We’re still making too many mistakes and giving the other team too many opportunities to score.”

After trading runs with Olathe South most of the first game — and suffering 10 strikeouts against Falcons pitcher Jessica Lally — LHS had one last chance in the bottom of the seventh.

With one out, left fielder Shannon Worley walked. Lacey Burnett struck out, but Worley stole second, then junior catcher Jennifer Narcomey laced a long, low ball to left field that scored Worley with the game-winning run.

“I knew that I didn’t want to go back out and play defense,” Narcomey said.

Making contact with the ball was tougher for the Lions in the second game — LHS didn’t score until the sixth against off-speed pitcher Megan Grissel, who struck out five Lions.

“It was really tough to adjust,” Narcomey said. “I was out in front a lot.”

The Falcons outhit the Lions in both games, but couldn’t string together enough hits in the first game to overcome pitcher Whitney Juneau.

“That’s the best outing she’s had so far,” Stogsdill said.

The Lions committed just five errors in the twinbill, but Stogsdill said her squad still had to work on its defense.

Lawrence High's Jennifer Morrel, top, looks for a call from the umpire after trying to tag out Olathe South's Vanessa Van Etten. Lawrence split a doubleheader Monday at Holcom Park.

The Lions will play host Friday to Shawnee Mission North.
