Lions battle to 2OT tie
For the second straight night, Lawrence High’s girls soccer team found itself in a double overtime battle.
This time, the Lions earned a 2-2 tie against Topeka Seaman, which eased Thursday’s 1-0 loss to Leavenworth.
“Overtime games are good,” LHS coach Keith Nelson said. “They make the girls really dig down deep and give everything they got. It gives them mental toughness and physical stamina that you need later on.”
The opening minutes of the seesaw game gave each squad gave several scoring opportunities.
Freshman Megan Johnson put the Lions (0-4-1) on the scoreboard first in the 23rd minute, after she knocked in a shot off a near-perfect feed from junior Leslie Belt.
The Vikings (2-1-2) later had a similar scoring play, with senior Amanda Broome taking a pass and knocking the ball over LHS junior keeper Shannon Fisher.
In the second half, Seaman had a couple chances, including a deflected ball that landed on top of the net.
The Lions broke the tie when freshman Raya Bowden scored after numerous LHS players crowded the goal box.
Bowden and fellow freshman forwards Johnson and Lindsey Lawrence constantly looked to drive the ball downfield, and Nelson said the talent is there for his young bunch — it’s just a matter of time.
“They get better every game but they’re still learning to play at this high of a level,” Nelson said. “It definitely takes time for freshmen to realize the pace.”
The Lions’ lead was short-lived when Viking sophomore Ashley Hards launched a shot that found its way over Fisher.
Seaman coach Jared Barnett said he noticed Fisher liked to play off her line and decided to capitalize.
“We talked about it at halftime if we get the ball in that spot to just turn around and shoot it,” Barnett said. “We’d only get one shot to the chip the goalie. Fortunately, it went in.”
Unfortunately for the Lions, the long-distance goal took away their first victory after neither team could find the net in two 10-minute overtime periods.
Nelson still has faith.
“We have the toughest schedule in the state of Kansas,” Nelson said. “Nobody’s gonna give us wins. We’re gonna have to earn them. We’re gonna have to step up and I believe we can.”
The Lions play host Tuesday to Olathe North.
