Firefighters trying to contain wildfire near Clinton Lake dam

Firefighters were working to contain a wildfire Wednesday just south of the dam at Clinton Lake.

Kanwaka, Clinton and Wakarusa township fire departments responded about 11 a.m. to the blaze in a wooded area. The fire was brought under control about noon after 15 acres had burned, Clinton Fire Chief Mark Hughes said.

“It’s pretty dry in there,” Hughes said.

Firefighters didn’t know how the fire started. They left the scene about 12:30 p.m. but Clinton firefighters were recalled shortly after 1 p.m. when the fire rekindled.

Douglas County Sheriff’s officers and Clinton Park Rangers blocked off the dam from road travel from about 11 a.m. until the fire was brought under control.
