LHS soccer clips Indians

? Josh Lorenzo converted a penalty kick in the final 80 seconds and Lawrence High picked up its first soccer victory of the season, 2-1 over Shawnee Mission North on Tuesday at the SM District fields.

“We played really well,” LHS coach Keith Nelson said. “We had a lot of outstanding games. Zach Stephens played an outstanding game, as did Tyler Rush. Oscar Ortega played a magnificent game. It was an exciting game.”

Ortega scored the Lions’ first goal, assisted by Stephens. The goal, in the 23rd minute of the second half, forged a 1-all tie.

That score held until the final 1:20 of the second overtime, when Ortega was taken out in the goal box, setting up Lorenzo’s penalty kick.

“We outplayed them,” Nelson said. “We outshot them 25-5, so we were definitely the better team. But we have to put the ball in the net.”

LHS (1-4) will play host to Shawnee Mission Northwest on Thursday. Game time is 7 p.m. at the Youth Sports Inc. fields.
