Cross country: LHS sweeps Invitational

? Lawrence High’s boys’ and girls’ cross country teams swept the team titles for the second straight week, winning the Shawnee Heights Invitational on Saturday at Lake Shawnee.

The boys trounced the field, beating second place Emporia by 42 points, in the Lions’ strongest overall showing of the year.

Seniors Dylan McClain and Andy Struble finished 2-3, covering the 5K course in 16:28 and 16:34, followed by senior John Zehr (sixth), Harry Swartz (ninth) and Drew Vogel (tenth).

The girls’ team actually tied with Blue Valley West with 65 points each, but the Lions were awarded the title because their sixth runner, senior Megan Davis, placed higher than the Jaguars’ sixth runner.

“It goes to show you never know how important your sixth runner is,” LHS coach Dick Reamon said.

Junior Meg Gentry and freshman Megan Johnson were the Lions’ top two runners, placing eighth and ninth, running 13:04 and 13:06 for two miles. Lauren Davis (12), Jenni Beasley (13) and Raya Bowden (26), rounded out the Lions’ top five.
