Shooting victim in critical condition

Police say the woman was a witness in a drug case against a 19-year-old suspect

A woman who was shot three times in the head and neck early Tuesday morning in east Lawrence was in “critical but stable” condition Tuesday afternoon in a Kansas City-area hospital, according to a Lawrence Police spokesman.

The spokesman, Sgt. Mike Pattrick, said a 19-year-old Lawrence man was arrested early Tuesday in connection with the shooting of the 31-year-old woman, who police say is a witness in a drug case against him.

The woman, who was shot at her home in eastern Lawrence, was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, then transferred to a Kansas City-area hospital.

Pattrick said the woman’s identity was being withheld because she told police she was sexually attacked before the shooting.

The suspect was arrested on these charges: attempted first-degree murder, aggravated intimidation of a witness, aggravated weapons violation and sexual battery.

Police said the suspect also was wanted on two other outstanding warrants unrelated to the shooting. He is scheduled to be charged at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in Douglas County District Judge Peggy Kittel’s court. The Journal-World usually does not identify suspects until they have been formally charged.

Police said the incident began about 2:30 a.m Tuesday when the suspect arrived at the woman’s home in the 1500 block of Haskell Avenue.

He knocked on the door and the woman, who is an acquaintance, let him inside, Pattrick said.

The woman told police that after the suspect was inside, he made sexual advances on her and she resisted. She told police the suspect then produced a handgun and shot her three times, Pattrick said.

The woman told police that after the shooting, the suspect left and she telephoned 911.

When police arrived the woman was alert and concious and able to provide police the name and identity of the attacker, Pattrick said.

Less than 10 minutes after that information was relayed to other officers, the suspect was found travelling in a vehicle near the intersection of 24th Street and Ousdahl Road, Pattrick said. He was arrested without incident.

“We were able to recover a .32-caliber handgun and some ammunition,” Pattrick said.

The charge of aggravated intimidation of a witness is related to the victim being a possible witness in a previous drug case involving the suspect, Pattrick said. He did not have immediate information about the status of that drug case.
