Police arrested three women and a man Thursday afternoon at the Jayhawk Motel, 1004 N. Third St. Officers said they found equipment in the room that could be used to make counterfeit $10, $20, $50 and $100 bills, Sgt. Mike Pattrick said.

Police were called about 1 p.m. Thursday by employees at Sonic Drive-In, 103 N. Third St. A woman had paid for a hamburger with what employees recognized as a counterfeit $50 bill, Pattrick said.

The employees saw what room the woman went to at the Jayhawk Motel across the street and reported it to police, Pattrick said.

Some of the suspects are from Arizona but at least one of the women is from Lawrence, police said.

The U.S. Secret Service is assisting with the investigation. Charges are pending.
