— For Tonganoxie, one out of three wasn't bad.

The Chieftains, who dropped two regular-season games to Lansing, defeated the top-seeded Lions, 70-64, on Friday to reach the Class 4A high school boys basketball sub-state championship at Hiawatha High.

Lansing looked to advance early, thanks to four three-pointers in the first quarter and a 20-11 lead. Tonganoxie, though, outscored Lansing in each of the next three quarters.

The Lions (16-6) finished 10-for-30 from behind the arc and shot 36 percent overall. No. 5 seed Tonganoxie (12-10) shot 50 percent from the field.

Chieftain coach David Walker said he was impressed with how his team responded in the fourth quarter. Tonganoxie never trailed in the final period.

"That was the key," Walker said. "We kept our composure."

Tonganoxie, guaranteed its first winning season in 10 years, will play No. 6 Atchison in the sub-state finals at 8 tonight.
