Poor first half dooms LHS – Olathe East girls 57, Lawrence 47

Fourth-quarter rally not enough for Lions

Maybe the girls who wore Lawrence High uniforms in the first half of Wednesday night’s game against Olathe East weren’t the real Lions.

They sure played a heck of a lot differently in the second half.

Lawrence High's Rachel Klingler, left, fights for a rebound with Olathe East's Britni Cone. Klingler scored 10 points in the Lions' 57-47 loss to the Hawks on Wednesday night at LHS. The Lions will play their third game this week Friday at Olathe South.

Lawrence made just three of 26 field-goal attempts, while the Hawks were 10 for 25 and used a 14-2 run in the first half to build a 27-12 halftime lead.

The game seemed to be over, but after a fairly even third quarter, in which the Hawks edged the Lions 15-11, Lawrence played like a new team.

The Lions (6-10) outscored Olathe East (9-8) 24-15 during the final period in 57-47 loss at the LHS gym.

Senior forward Mandy Amyx and sophomore forward Rachel Klingler each scored 10 points to lead the Lions. Olathe East junior guard Erin Mehi led all players with 16 points.

Lawrence, which was playing its second game in as many nights, committed 23 fouls, 16 coming in the second half, and Olathe East capitalized by making 24 of 36 free throws.

“They’re solid down low in the post,” said Lawrence coach Kristin Mallory, whose team defeated Shawnee Mission West on Tuesday. “We were trying to put bodies on bodies and sometimes we got a little too physical and the referees noticed it and called it.”

The Lions were able to generate 24 points in the fourth quarter because the Hawks changed their defense, Mallory said, and the Lions tried a different lineup of players to offset Olathe East’s new front.

“We just pushed it harder,” Amyx said. “We said at halftime that we weren’t going to let them beat us as bad as they were.”

Lawrence made nine baskets more than the previous three quarters combined and connected on five of six free throws, but the Lions had committed too many fouls earlier in the half and the Hawks reached the double-bonus before the seven-minute mark of the final period.

“They play excellent defense,” Mallory said. “They did a good job on us down low and made it tough for us to get the ball into the paint.”
