Spring Hill sinks Baldwin

? Holly Gault usually doesn’t have a whole row of fans at Spring Hill’s girls basketball games.

But during the finals of the Eudora Invitational on Thursday, it was obvious that a special section of the crowd was cheering — quite loudly, too — for Gault and the Broncos.

“I was kind of embarrassed,” said Gault, a Kansas University women’s soccer signee, of her five-woman fan club of KU soccer players.

The group was vocal anytime Gault touched the ball. The Jayhawks also drew spur-of-the-moment signs spelling out the future KU player’s name and chanted a rousing rendition of “Rock Chalk Jayhawk” during the final seconds of Spring Hill’s 46-27 victory.

“It did pump me up,” said Gault, who scored six points in the lopsided finale, which featured the Broncos breaking a 10-all first quarter tie with a 16-3 run in the second quarter.

It took Baldwin nearly 19 minutes to match its initial 10-point output from the first quarter.

By then, Spring Hill — led by all-tournament player Jessica Hocker’s 19-point performance — was on cruise control.

“They’re a great team,” said Baldwin coach Eric Toot, whose 19-4 squad last season suffered three setbacks to Spring Hill. “They have a way of taking us out of everything that we want to do.”

Baldwin's Anna Skaggs, right, is surrounded by towering Spring Hill post players Megan Sullivan, left, and Josie Gehrt. The Bulldogs lost to Broncos, 46-27, Thursday in the championship of the Eudora Invitational.

That included all but completely shutting down Emily Brown, the all-tournament Bulldog who had scored 52 points in Baldwin’s first two tourney games.

On Thursday Brown, who had a triple-double Tuesday, scored just four points on 2-of-6 shooting.

“It wasn’t her fault,” Toot said. “When you’re not hitting any of your shots, that’s going to go against her.”

The Bulldogs misfired on a dozen three-point attempts in the first half, allowing Spring Hill’s defense to collapse on Brown.

Megan Sullivan, a 6-foot-1 all-tourney player who scored five points for the Broncos, was able to keep Brown outside of the blocks.

Baldwin, which trailed 36-18 heading into the fourth quarter, finally attacked the rim in the final period. When the Bulldogs’ shots didn’t fall in the lane, Baldwin went to the line. But the Bulldogs connected on just half of their eight free-throw attempts.

After the game, Gault thanked her Jayhawk talkers.

“We had to support our ‘baby Jay,'” said KU junior Sarah Gonzalez, who led the cheerleading corps of sophomores Meghan Miller and Gabriela Quiggle and freshmen Holly Ryder and Caroline Smith.

“It was a huge moral victory,” said Eudora coach Cara Kimberlin, whose squad scored 58 points in Eudora’s first two tourney games.

The Cardinals used an 18-4 third quarter run to lead 43-33 heading into the fourth.
