Graduation ceremonies short, sweet

More than 170 journalism, engineering and computer science majors at Kansas University were recognized Sunday during fall-semester graduation ceremonies at Woodruff Auditorium.

“It was a perfect graduation ceremony – it was short, to the point, and it honored the graduates,” said Lorie Sjostrom, whose son, Mike Sjostrom, is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in journalism.

Sjostrom says her son hopes to become a firefighter and someday write about issues affecting his peers.

About 300 parents, relatives and friends attended the two ceremonies: engineering and computer science at 1 p.m., journalism at 3 p.m.

“We had big turnout,” said Stuart Bell, dean of KU’s School of Engineering. “We had about 60 graduates, but with all their families and friends ” the auditorium wouldn’t have held any more. It was packed.”

The engineering and computer science ceremony was emceed by Michael Frisbie, a Shawnee senior.

KU Associate Vice Provost James Carothers addressed the journalism graduates.

“Seize this day and the others that follow it,” Carothers said, encouraging the 117 degree recipients.
