Keep standardized test results in context of full education picture, district advises
Results of student performance on one standardized exam, such as the Stanford 9, shouldn’t set off big alarm bells in anyone’s head, Lawrence school officials say.
Local, state and national tests given to students ought to be examined as a whole to get a clear picture of academic performance in the 10,000-student district, said Austin Turney, the Lawrence school board’s vice president.
He said a review of ACT, SAT, state exams in reading, writing and math, Stanford 9, as well as district assessments, indicated students in Lawrence public schools were being well educated.
“Our public schools have a great deal to be proud of,” Turney said.
Specifically, he said the district’s scores on the ACT and SAT remained above state and national averages.
