Vinson to play in all-star tilt Saturday

Lawrence High senior to run point for Kansas squad in HyVee Classic

Lawrence High senior Stephen Vinson on Saturday night will get one more go-around with area basketball players, only this time those players will be his teammates.

Vinson, the Sunflower League player of the year, will play point guard for Kansas at the sixth annual HyVee High School All-Star Basketball Classic on Saturday at Johnson County Community College. Tipoff is approximately 8 p.m. The all-star girls game is scheduled for 6 p.m.

“It’s fun to play with some guys you’ve competed against,” said Vinson, who averaged 15.9 points a game in 2001-02 to help LHS reach the Class 6A state tournament for the first time in seven years.

Vinson is one of three all-Sunflower League players in the contest, which features top senior players in the Kansas City area. The others are Olathe East’s Drew Mathews and Shawnee Mission North’s Nathan Winslow. Members of the Greater Kansas City Basketball Coaches Assn. selected the all-stars.

“There always are some real good players in it, so it’s something I want to play in,” said Vinson, who is undecided on a college choice. “I’m sure it’ll be a fun game.”

Vinson also is one of five finalists for the DiRenna Award, which honors the top boys basketball player in the Kansas City area. The award winner will be announced tonight during a banquet at the Kansas City Marriott Downtown, 200 West 12th St.

“Once it was explained to me and the past people who won it it’s a pretty big honor just to be a finalist for it,” Vinson said.

Kansas University freshman Wayne Simien, a McDonald’s All-American for the 2000-01 season while playing for Leavenworth, won the award last year.

The award is named after Dr. James A DiRenna, who died in 1996. DiRenna was a surgeon, teacher, hospital developer and sports enthusiast.
