Lions stay hot on cool night
Lawrence strikes early in 7-4 victory over SM West
Lawrence High is just chillin’.
On another brisk evening, Lawrence and its cooler heads prevailed, toppling Shawnee Mission West, 7-4, at Ice Field on Thursday.

Lawrence High third baseman Tommy Mangino, left, tags out Shawnee Mission West's Roy Wendt. Wendt was caught in a rundown between third and home. The Lions defeated SM West, 7-4, Thursday at Ice Field.
LHS (4-1 overall, 3-0 Sunflower League) scored three runs in the first inning and never trailed the Vikings (1-4) en route to its third consecutive victory.
“The top of our lineup has been doing a good job at the start of the game, setting the table for Troy (Wingert) and Tommy (Mangino),” LHS coach David Petry said.
LHS senior shortstop Chris Johnson opened the bottom of the first with a double and senior center fielder Rob Scott followed with a single before Wingert singled.
The Lions also were aided by three SM West errors and a catcher’s interference call in the first inning.
“That helped (starting pitcher) Taylor (Martin) going out there with a 3-0 lead after the first inning,” Petry said.

Shawnee Mission West's Derek Ryan slides home past Lawrence pitcher Taylor Martin. Ryan scored on a wild pitch Thursday at Ice Field.
Martin struck out three Vikings and allowed four hits and one walk in six innings. Wingert pitched the final inning. He allowed no hits, struck out one and walked one in the seventh, when West scored once.
“When you’re not walking people they’re having to earn their way onto base instead of us giving them free passes,” Petry said. “Taylor has quite a bit of velocity on his fastball and Troy throws pretty hard too. Sometimes West had trouble catching up to those fastballs.”
Other than a three-run third, Martin was in control. Martin allowed two hits in the third and two of West’s runs came on wild pitches.
“The defense did a great job,” Martin (2-0) said. “Rob Scott made some big plays and so did (second baseman) Daniel Dulin. It’s reassuring you can throw it anywhere knowing they can make a play.”
LHS outhit West, 9-4. Lion senior designated hitter Joe Bell had two of Lawrence’s hits. Senior left fielder Derek Bailey scored two runs.
Next for the Lions is a doubleheader against Shawnee Heights at Lake Shawnee on Saturday. The first game begins at 1 p.m.
