Lions lambaste Lancers in softball sweep
LHS outscores SM East 18-0 in twinbill
Two shutout victories and no errors by the defense.
Indeed, Thursday was a great day to be a Lion softball player as Lawrence High swept a Sunflower League doubleheader from Shawnee Mission East at Holcom Park. LHS won the first game, 12-0, and the second, 6-0.

Lawrence High's Jenni Morrell tags Jess Wiard of Shawnee Mission East on a failed steal attempt. The Lions swept a doubleheader Thursday at Holcom Park.
“We really needed this doubleheader and hopefully we got some confidence back tonight,” said LHS coach Reenie Stogsdill, whose squad had lost three in a row since winning its season opener.
In the first game, Lawrence (3-3) scored three runs in the first inning, one in the second, five in the third and three in the fourth to run-rule the Lancers (0-4).
“In the first game, we came out and scored some runs and didn’t sit on those runs,” Stogsdill said. “We played every inning. That’s what we’ve been working for to put together a complete game. We did a good job.”
The key hits in the first inning were an RBI double by senior right fielder Haley Bowlin and a two-run single by senior first baseman Larissa Johnson. Bowlin, who has four doubles in six games, tripled in the fourth inning to score a run.
“Haley’s really been swinging the bat well for us,” Stogsdill said. “I’m confident if we get a runner on and Haley is coming up, I’m thinking we can get some runs out of it.”
In the bottom of the third, sophomore shortstop Jenni Morrell launched a double over the left fielder’s head to clear the bases in the five-run inning.
Meanwhile, LHS senior pitcher Ashley Burnett went the distance. She tossed a two-hitter two singles in the fourth and struck out six with no walks in five innings to improve her record to 2-2.
“The first game we played probably as well as we could have played because we were in the game the whole time talking to each other,” said Bowlin, who has five extra-base hits this season.
Johnson, aided by a four-run first inning, was the winning pitcher in the second game. SM East’s lone threat came in the top of the seventh, when the Lancers loaded the bases with three singles. Before that inning, no Lancer had reached second base against Johnson.
LHS sophomore catcher Jennifer Narcomey threw out three runners trying to steal second.
“I was surprised they kept running after getting out a couple of times,” said Narcomey, who went 2-for-4 in the second game. “If they keep going, I’ll keep throwing them.”
LHS sophomore second baseman Teal Meyer went 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the second game.
The Lions will play a doubleheader next Thursday at Shawnee Mission North.
