Lions blank Pioneers, 4-0

Lawrence shuts down Leavenworth in first victory of season

Entering Thursday night’s game against Leavenworth, the Lawrence High girls’ soccer team had yet to score a goal.

The Lions ended that streak quickly, though, scoring three early goals in a 4-0 victory over the Pioneers at Youth Sports Inc. Fields. The victory ended a six-game winless streak that stretched back to last season.

Lawrence high's Monica Ruiz, left, beats Leavenworth's Monica Williams to the ball. Lawrence defeated Leavenworth on Thursday at Youth Sports Inc.

“The fact that we hadn’t scored yet didn’t stress me out,” LHS coach Keith Nelson said, “because we had played two awfully good teams, but I had a feeling today that our girls would figure it out and start finishing and they did.”

Kara Roelofs finished twice against the Pioneers (1-5), scoring the first two goals for the Lions (1-1-1).

“Our team definitely needed some goals to get our confidence up,” Roelofs said. “We all worked really well tonight. We had a lot of chances and finished four of them. It was great.”

Roelofs also added an assist on Lawrence’s third goal, a shot by junior Aly Barland.

“Kara is a great player,” Nelson said. “She’s incredibly smart on the field and her decision making is just outstanding. She’s really come into her own this year as far as her speed and her power.”

Up 3-0 at the break, Lawrence still fought for goals, attacking the net every chance it had and finishing with 28 shots on goal.

“Our goal was to do what we did, which was get shots on goal,” Nelson said. “We had only three defending and we played smart soccer. It wasn’t just kicking the ball around, it was quality soccer, and we accomplished exactly what we wanted.”

Monica Ruiz finished the Lions’ scoring, taking a pass from Samantha Lopez, beating two Leavenworth defenders and burying the ball behind keeper Maggie Finney.

Lawrence nearly had a few more goals, but one was waved off because of an offsides call, Lindsay Garito’s free kick with 26 1/2 minutes left in the second half glanced off the cross bar and Finney made two point-blank saves late in the game.

Lawrence returns to action at 6:15 tonight at Topeka Seamen.

“Topeka Seamen is a team that I think will be a little bit better than Leavenworth,” Nelson said, “but it’s a game we’d like to win.”
