Lawrence’s Elwell wins three matches

? Lawrence High junior Scott Elwell went 3-0 to lead the Lions at a tennis quadrangular on Thursday at Topeka West.

Elwell won decisively, 8-0, 8-0 and 8-1.

“The day’s highlight was Scott Elwell’s play at No. 1 singles,” LHS coach Dick Wedel said.

“Losing just one game in three matches is a show of strength.”

The Lions beat Topeka West, 3-1, and Topeka Seaman, 3-1. Topeka Washburn Rural beat Lawrence, 3-1.

“We won more matches (seven) than we lost (five) so we can count the day a success,” Wedel said.

Lawrence High’s No. 2 singles player, Owe Rambau, went 2-1.

Lawrence’s No. 2 doubles team of David Parkinson and Galo Salcedo also went 2-1.

“The most fun today was had by David Parkinson and Galo Salcedo,” Wedel said. “They played better in each round, and found a desire to win and have fun at the same time. I enjoyed watching them.”

Next for LHS is a home dual Monday against Free State. The first match will begin at 3 p.m. at Lawrence Tennis Center.
