Two men allegedly attempted to avoid being arrested Thursday in separate Lawrence incidents, and they may have made things more difficult for themselves as a result.

At 1:50 a.m. Thursday, an officer tried to stop a vehicle for a traffic infraction near 11th and Massachusetts streets, Sgt. Amy Rhoads, public information officer for the Lawrence Police Department, told the Journal-World via email.

The vehicle fled at a high speed, and the officer ended the pursuit when it led to a residential neighborhood near Eighth and New York streets, Rhoads said; a short time later, what was believed to be the same vehicle was involved in a one-vehicle accident at 11th and Connecticut streets.

A 22-year-old man with a Lawrence address was arrested on suspicion of fleeing or attempting to elude with five or more moving violations, reckless driving and driving under the influence, Douglas County Jail booking logs indicate.

Rhoads said an affidavit has been forwarded to the Douglas County district attorney to consider charges. The booking log shows the man bonded out on $2,500 cash or surety, and he is due back in court Sept. 2.

Later Thursday, around 11:48 a.m., officers were dispatched to 707 Vermont St. — the Lawrence Public Library — for a report of trespassing in progress, Rhoads said.

Officers located a man matching the description given to dispatch. Then, “The suspect was not cooperative and when officers (went) to detain him, he resisted arrest,” Rhoads wrote.

Brandon Michael Frye, 26, of Shawnee, was arrested on suspicion of two counts of battery on a law enforcement officer, one count of assault on a law enforcement officer and two counts of attempted interference with law enforcement, according to Douglas County Jail booking records. Charges had not been filed against him as of Thursday evening.

The Journal-World reported about an attempted robbery alleged to have occurred Dec. 26, 2018 at Kansas Crown Discount Liquor, 1215 W. Sixth St. In that case, the suspect reportedly threatened to rob the business if not given free alcohol, but employees were able to restrain him until police arrived, LPD said at the time.

The suspect in that case was Frye. Online court records show he was charged Dec. 28 and later convicted on a plea deal. Kansas Department of Corrections records show Frye’s conviction to be criminal threat, a low-level felony, and they indicate that he was serving intensive supervision probation in Douglas County.

Frye was being held without bond Thursday evening, jail records show.
