Lawrence liquor store employees restrain robbery suspect until police arrive

Employees restrained a man who threatened to rob their liquor store Wednesday night, holding him until police arrived, according to the Lawrence Police Department.

Just after 8:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to a disturbance at Kansas Crown Discount Liquor, 1215 W. Sixth St., Officer Shawn Gross said in an email. A person inside was refusing to leave the business and threatened to rob it if not given free alcohol, Gross said.

“The subject did not have any money to purchase alcohol, and was refused service multiple times,” Gross said. “The subject finally demanded alcohol from an employee or he would be robbed.”

When officers arrived, employees had restrained the suspect, Gross said. Based on information given by witnesses, the person was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery.

Nobody was injured, Gross said.

The suspect was a 25-year-old Shawnee man, Brandon M. Frye, according to corresponding jail records. Charges against him had not been filed in Douglas County District Court as of Thursday afternoon.
