Former Lawrence pitcher selected to Team USA in World Baseball Classic
Former Lawrence High pitcher Garrett Cleavinger is spending his spring with Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, competing with some of the best American baseball players in a worldwide tournament.
Cleavinger pitched for Lawrence from 2009-12 and helped the Lions appear in three state tournaments with a state championship in 2009. After holding a 1.92 ERA his senior year, Cleavinger played for Oregon, where he got in the record books for his pitching. He’s tied for eighth in all-time wins at Oregon and is first in both lowest opponent batting average (.165) and total appearances (109).
Cleavinger was drafted 102nd overall in the third round by the Baltimore Orioles in 2015 and stayed with the Orioles’ organization until 2017, when he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies. In 2020, Cleavinger made his MLB debut against the New York Mets.
After a stint with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Cleavinger was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays in 2022. Over the last two seasons, Cleavinger has built a role in the bullpen. In 2024, Cleavinger was ninth on the Rays in innings pitched while appearing in 68 games. He was seventh on the team last year with a team-best ERA among pitchers who threw more than 60 innings.
Now, Cleavinger is tasked with being a reliever for Team USA, which is in the B pool with Brazil, Great Britain, Italy and Mexico. Through two games, USA is 2-0 with wins over Brazil and Great Britain.
