Lawrence girls wrestling team returns to action with Dodge City Showdown

The Lawrence girls wrestling team returned to action from winter break in Dodge City on Saturday and competed against 19 other teams in the Dodge City Lady Demon Showdown.

The Lions placed 11th in the tournament with three wrestlers finishing in the top five of their weight classes. Goldy Stephens led the way for the Lions with 10.0 points by finishing as the runner-up in the 235-pound weight class. After a first-round bye, Stephens got three wins by pinning her opponent in under a minute, including her first pin in under 30 seconds. In the first-place match, Stephens lost by a pin in the second period.

Sanique McCallister placed fifth in the 235-pound weight class by going 3-2 in what was her first tournament competition. McCallister started with two losses from pins but won out the rest of the way. She had a 16-second pin in the third round, a 53-second pin in the fourth round and a 12-second pin in the fifth-place match.

Imogen Matter also placed fifth while competing in the 145-pound weight class. She started with two wins by pins but lost her third and fourth round matches after being pinned. Matter bounced back with a win in her final match with a pin in 1 minute, 57 seconds.

In the 155-pound bracket, Elizabeth Mock placed seventh with a 3-2 record. Mock was pinned in her first two matches but won in the third round with a 13-second pin. She finished strong with two more pins to finish the tournament.

Annabelle Ackerman finished ninth in the 115-pound weight class, going 3-1 in the tournament. After a bye, Ackerman lost her first match with a pin, but she responded with three pins to take ninth.

Juliana Hout placed 10th in the 135-pound weight class. Hout lost her first match then had a bye before losing her second match. Hout rebounded with a 41-second pin in the consolation bracket, which put her in the ninth-place match. There, she lost by a pin.

Paige Fishburn and Ivy Ford both placed 11th in their respective weight classes. Fishburn competed in the 120-pound weight class and started with two losses before a bye. She lost her first consolation bracket match but won the 11th-place match with a medical forfeit. Ford wrestled in the 130-pound bracket and picked up her first win in a 13-10 sudden victory after losing her first two matches. Ford lost her first consolation bracket match but won the 11th-place match with a pin.

In the 125-pound weight class, NeFenha Farve placed 14th, picking up her second win of the season in the tournament. Farve lost her first three matches but won her consolation bracket match with a third-period pin. She was pinned in her final match for 13th place.

Lawrence will next wrestle on Wednesday as the Lions host a dual against Baldwin.
