Preps Notebook: Local girls golf teams compete in regional tournaments; Free State cross-country sweeps Billy Mills Classic

Baldwin finishes as runner-up, Eudora third in 4A girls golf regional tournament

Baldwin, Eudora and Tonganoxie all competed in the Bishop Miege 4A regional on Monday, with the Bulldogs placing second, the Cardinals third and the Chieftains fifth. As top three placing teams, Baldwin and Eudora earned state tournament bids.

Baldwin scored a 360 team score and was led by regional champion Peyton Wright, who shot a 75. Carson Chambers placed seventh with an 88 score, and Jada Sansome finished 10th overall with a 94.

Addy Scraper shot a 103 that was 20th in the regional, while Charity Thompson finished eight strokes behind her with a 111 that placed her 25th.

For Eudora, the team finished with a 365 team score and was led by Marleigh Grant, who was the individual runner-up with a 79 score. Brooklynn Akers shot an 84 in the regional, which was fifth-best individually.

Lily Wright and Josie Vogt finished with a 101 score, while Brynn Deterding shot a 107 for 24th. Leslie Cundiff made the top 30 with a 123 score that was 29th in the regional.

The Chieftains had the fifth-best team score with a 437. Paityn Van Middlesworth led the team by shooting a 95, which was 11th individually. Julia Staples came second on the team with a 104 that placed her 21st, and May Stephens shot a 112 that put her 27th individually.

Madyson Leffert placed 33rd with a 126, and Aria Brandem finished 37th by shooting 140. Brooke Nichals took 38th with a 149.

Free State, Lawrence compete in 6A girls golf regional tournaments, Free State girls earn state bid

Free State and Lawrence competed in different girls golf regional tournaments on Monday, with the Firebirds placing third in their regional and the Lions placing seventh in theirs.

The Firebirds competed at the Arthur B. Sim Golf Course in Wichita for the Maize regional and placed third with a 367 team score. As a top-three team, the Firebirds earned a bid to the state tournament next week. The Lions were in Lenexa for the Falcon Ridge Golf Club for the Olathe Northwest regional and placed seventh with a 459 score.

In the Maize regional, Claire Heinritz shot an 87, which was ninth individually and led the Firebirds. Laurel Stancil placed 13th overall by scoring a 91, and Tola Jankowski finished one stroke behind Stancil with a 92 score that was 15th.

Mallory White placed 17th by shooting a 97, and Haylee Graham scored a 104 to place 19th. Avery Lonneburg rounded out the Firebirds with a 109 that placed her 21st.

For Lawrence, Cami Nauholz led the team by placing 19th individually. She shot a 100 in the tournament. Isabelle Richards shot a 115 and placed 34th, while Mila Morrison finished 40th with a 120.

Keira Wells and Lola Johnson placed 42nd and 44th, respectively. Wells shot a 124, while Johnson scored 131.

Free State cross-country teams win Billy Mills Classic at Haskell

Free State won both the boys and girls 5K races in the Billy Mills Classic on Saturday at the Haskell Indian Nations University’s cross-country course.

In the girls race, Veritas Christian’s Liv Maddox won with an 18-minute, 45.70-second run. Free State’s Taylor Hulcher finished as the runner-up with an 18:53.20 time.

For the other Firebird girls, Nadia Karapuda placed fifth at 19:30.10, and Frye Eloise finished seventh at 19:49.60. Grace Christline, Julia Velasco, Madison Whitney and Amelia Brewer placed 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th respectively. Christline finished 1.50 seconds under 20 minutes, while the other three finished within the first 10 seconds of the 20-minute mark, rounding out Free State’s top seven runners.

Aside from Maddox, Veritas Christian had two other runners run in the girls race. Juliana Yaluk-Shults finished 27th at 21:22.90, and Lizzy Machina took 62nd at 27:24.90.

In the boys 5K run, Firebirds Jasper Hansen Terry and Jonah Frye tied as the runner-ups at 16:15.90. Nicholas Johnson took fourth at 16:17.50.

Anderson Bateman placed seventh at 16:25.00, and Kyle Sikes finished ninth at 16:42.50. Isaac Horner rounded out the top 10 as the sixth Firebird in with a 16:51.20 run. Free State’s seventh runner was Steven Jackson, who finished 18th at 17:05.80.
