Free State boys golf takes 8th with 3 state placers, Lawrence qualifier finishes as state placer

Free State placed eighth as a team in the two-day 6A state golf tournament in Winfield, with a team score of 316.

The Free State score only counts the team’s first-day results from Tuesday, as the Firebirds didn’t have enough qualifiers to qualify for the second day, Wednesday, as a team. Shawnee Mission East won the 6A state tournament with a 582 team score, while Blue Valley North’s Brady Rapp won the individual title with a 136 score.

Lawrence sent senior Nate Schworm to the tournament, and he finished 51st individually, with a 161 across the two-day tournament. He shot a 77 the first day, which was 28th, and an 84 on the second day.

For the Firebirds, Henry Thompson led the team as he finished 13th overall individually. He shot a 74 on the first day, which was 15th individually, and improved the next day with a 73.

Not far behind Thompson came Cash Nelson, who placed 21st individually. He started with a 78 on the first day but improved by five strokes and shot 73 on the second day. A.J. Kimzey was the third Firebird to qualify for the second day, and he shot an 81 on both days. He finished tied for 48th individually.

All three placers will be back with the Firebirds next year. Thompson and Nelson are juniors this year, while Kimzey is a sophomore.

A few Firebirds competed on the first day but didn’t qualify for the second. Preston Hosler finished +11 on the first day, which was tied for 57th. Aiden Graff-Hannah finished two strokes behind Hosler, which was 63rd, and Adam Hemker placed 91st individually with a 101.
