Preps Notebook: Regional tournaments conclude for baseball, boys golf, girls soccer and softball

The regional week of the spring sports season outside of track and field concluded on Thursday, determining which teams and athletes will advance to state tournaments. Here’s how local teams fared in those tournaments:

Baseball

Free State held the No. 1 seed in the 6A West and won the regional games by a combined 21-1, setting the Firebirds up for another state tournament berth. The Firebirds enter the 6A state tournament with the top seed and a 25-2 record and start with No. 8 Washburn Rural on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Hoglund Ballpark in Lawrence.

Lawrence lost its first game to No. 1 Olathe West 3-0 on Wednesday, which ended the Lions’ season.

No. 8 Tonganoxie upset No. 1 undefeated Hayden in the regional championship 9-8 to advance to the 4A state tournament. The Chieftains beat El Dorado 10-0 to set them up for the championship game. Tonganoxie will enter the 4A tournament as the No. 8 seed and will face No. 1 McPherson on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Dean Evans Stadium in Salina.

Baldwin won its first game 2-1 to put the Bulldogs in the regional championship against Paola. There, the Bulldogs lost 14-1.

Eudora lost 10-0 to Rock Creek in the first game of the Rock Creek regional tournament, which ended their season.

Perry-Lecompton was the No. 3 seed in the 3A Bishop Ward regional but lost the championship to Jefferson West. The Kaws won their first two games before losing the championship 12-2.

Boys golf

Free State’s golf team qualified for the state meet by scoring a 313, which was second best in the Topeka Country Club regional. Henry Thompson had the top individual finish with a 73. Cash Nelson shot a 78, which was sixth, and A.J. Kimzey tied for seventh with a 79 score. Aiden Graff-Hannah finished by shooting an 83, which was 15th, while Preston Hosler tied for 16th with an 85. Adam Hecker shot a 96, which was 30th individually.

Lawrence held a regional tournament at Eagle Bend Golf Course, and Nate Schworm qualified individually for the state tournament. Schworm tied for seventh individually with a 75. Andrew Kirkwood tied for 28th with an 87, and Lou Elsten finished one stroke behind with an 88, putting him 30th. Corbin May-Bryant and Jackson Lind both shot a 92, which tied them for 39th. Cameron Wycoff scored a 104, which tied for 45th.

Tonganoxie finished fifth in the 4A regional at Wamego Country Club with a 346. Zac Fisher led the team, finishing tied for 14th at 83, and Luke McRae scored an 84, which was tied for 16th. Lachlan McRae shot an 87 for 24th, and Gavin Reischman shot a 92 for 26th. Carson Heffel scored a 103, and Wesley Johnson shot a 105.

Eudora scored 361 for seventh in the Wamego regional. Ty Deterding qualified for the state tournament individually by tying for fifth with a 77. Brady Von Holten scored a 91, while Beckham Erpelding finished with one stroke more. Cayden Dittmer shot a 101, Brayden Chappelle shot a 113 and Lash Kueffer scored a 119.

Baldwin finished eighth in the Wamego regional with a 404. Jett Good led the team with a 95, which tied for 32nd. Jase Hout scored a 98, and Wyatt Johnson scored a 100. Jesse Wadel scored 111, and Maddox Madl shot one strike more at 112. Joe Wadel finished shooting a 130.

Perry-Lecompton finished fifth in the 3A Lake Shawnee regional meet. Marius Carlsen led the Kaws with a 79 score, which tied for seventh. Ethan Tolbert shot an 81 for ninth individually. Colton Bahnmaier shot a 94, and Liam Ellis scored a 96. Hudson Rodgers finished scoring a 97, and Easton Graves shot a 101.

Girls soccer

Free State is returning to the quarterfinal for the second straight year after winning the No. 2 regional at Derby. The Firebirds entered with the No. 10 seed and started with a 4-1 win over No. 7 Wichita North on Tuesday. Against Derby on Thursday in the regional championship, the Firebirds won 2-1 with goals from Whittney Bogart and Lauren Woods. Free State will face Maize (13-5) on Monday for the quarterfinal match.

Lawrence lost 5-0 to No. 2 Mill Valley on Wednesday, which ended the Lions’ season.

Eudora won its regional championship 2-0 over Atchison and will face No. 1 Louisburg in the quarterfinal match on Monday at Wildcat Stadium Complex in Louisburg.

Baldwin beat Heritage Christian Academy 3-2 to go to the regional championship against Louisburg, but the Bulldogs lost 6-0 in the championship.

Tonganoxie beat Maranatha Christian Academy 9-2 in the regional semifinal but lost to Kansas City Christian 2-1 in penalty kicks in the regional championship.

Bishop Seabury won its regional semifinal game against Bishop Ward 8-0 but lost to Bishop Miege 8-0 on Wednesday in the regional championship.

Softball

Lawrence softball lost 5-4 to Olathe North in the regional championship after beating Shawnee Mission North in the semifinal game. Free State beat Wichita Northwest 16-7 in the regional semifinal but lost 5-0 to Derby in the regional championship.

Eudora is returning to the 4A state tournament for the fourth straight year after winning its regional games 28-0. The Cardinals are the No. 2 seed in the 4A tournament and will start with No. 7 Rock Creek on Thursday at 3 p.m. at South High School in Salina.

Tonganoxie won its regional semifinal game 8-0 over Ottawa but lost 10-6 to Rock Creek in the regional championship. Baldwin beat Atchison 19-1 in the regional semifinal game but lost 4-3 to Wamego in the regional championship.

Perry-Lecompton beat West Franklin 15-9 in the first regional game but lost in the next round to Jefferson West 14-7 on Wednesday.
