Lawrence High’s wrestling team picked up one win and dropped three matches during a two-day stretch this week, but the team’s lone victory was significant because it came at home on senior day.

The Lions secured a 39-33 victory over Louisburg Tuesday night at LHS to start the week off right. Andrew Honas, Brandt Wollesen, Hunter Girard, Kevin Honas, Zac Logan, Zach Razak, Anthony Morales and Ralph Saldana all won their respective matches for LHS in the home event.

Lawrence was unable to maintain that momentum the following day, however, when it dropped all three matches at the Olathe West quadrangular on Wednesday. LHS fell to Olathe East (48-36), Olathe West (48-36) and Blue Valley Northwest (48-33) in the four-team event.

Still, a number of individuals found some success on the mat against quality competition. Jack Elsten, who is ranked No. 4 in the 113-pound weight class, won all three of his matches on the night to continue a sensational sophomore season.

Kevin Honas, a junior ranked No. 2 in the 120-pound weight class, also notched three victories in as many matches. Logan Farrell went 3-0 in his three matches in the 132-pound weight class.

Andrew Honas (106-pound weight class), Razak (138-pound weight class) and Morales (160-pound weight class) all walked away with multiple wins and one loss in their respective weight group.

This week’s showing came after Lawrence lost all three matches in the KC Duals at Liberty High School on Saturday. LHS fell to Liberty (64-12), Lafayette (72-12) and Park Hill (40-29), though it was great competition for a young wrestling squad.

Lawrence will have another tough event this Saturday, when it travels to Tonganoxie to face three ranked teams in a quadrangular. Tonganoxie, Mill Valley and Free State will all be competing this weekend.
