Letter to the editor: Deli group has troubling record
To the editor:
In response to Chad Lawhorn’s Oct. 22 article about the “unique group” planning to open the Yellow Deli in downtown Lawrence, it’s important to note that the proposed deli is not simply a charming new spot for “the best hot sandwiches in town.”
The Yellow Deli is operated by The Twelve Tribes, a communal religious group that has long been the subject of serious criticism. Former members and investigators have reported authoritarian control, child labor violations, corporal punishment of children, and racist and homophobic teachings. Authorities in both Germany and the U.S. have investigated the group for child abuse and illegal labor practices.
While Lawhorn mentions that The Twelve Tribes has been the subject of multiple allegations, his understandable wish to be even-handed may leave readers with the impression that they are minor or disputed, when in fact they are grave and well-documented. Residents of Lawrence, should know that the Yellow Deli is part of an organization with a deeply troubling record that warrants careful scrutiny and concern.
