Letter to the editor: Kill the bill

To the editor:

Let’s call the “Big Beautiful Bill” what it really is:

1. A stealth bill that hides items within its 900 pages that will never be debated on their own merits.

2. An upward transfer of wealth. The wealthy get an enormous tax cut while the poor are deprived of vital services from Medicaid and SNAP, among others.

3. A trillion-dollar increase in the national debt, already unsustainable (cf. The Economist).

4. A significant setback in the fight against global warming by gutting renewable energy programs and favoring fossil fuels.

5. A shift in power from the judiciary to the executive by weakening the court’s only enforcement mechanism, contempt of court.

6. A significant increase in budgets of the military, notoriously wasteful with its profligate spending.

7. A significant decrease in spending on the social safety net, already the weakest among wealthy countries.

Kill the Bill!
