Letter to the editor: An ‘informance’

To the editor:

Sunflower Elementary School was the scene of a delightful third-grade “informance” called “Music in Motion” on Dec. 10. I was lucky enough to be invited and had my spirits lifted by this inspiring program. Visually, the children appeared in various clothing choices, some expressing diverse ethnic or cultural backgrounds. Program selections included a greeting song, acknowledging greetings spoken in different languages around the world, as well as locally, in this multicultural nation of ours. Other song selections included a movement song, a partner song, a game song, a round and a folk dance. At several points, special people chosen by a third grader were participants, dancing with their partner, or playing “Mi Gallo,” the Rooster game, which proved a lively time. The interactions between family members, students and audience all reflected a sense of caring and acceptance. The music teacher exercised patience and control over the interactive nature of the program, showing flexibility and understanding of appropriate expectations for children and families.

This elementary school event communicated a sense of understanding, caring and respect for community that I wish were reflected across our state and nation. Perhaps this holiday season, we can all reflect on what we hope for the future of our children and what kind of leaders we want our children to see as our chosen examples for them to follow.
