Letter to the editor: Let teachers have a voice

To the editor:

When decisions are made about employees, why are they not in the room? The Lawrence school district’s chief academic officer, Patrick Kelly, was quoted as “working with a number of administrators to develop that schedule.” Where were the educators affected by the schedule? Just “using the negotiated agreement as a guideline” is not enough. The educators are a part of the negotiated agreement and deserve to be “at the table.”

The same disregard happens in the Kansas Legislature. Decisions are made without the educator voice. Let the representatives of the teachers union and members in the room and at the table work together. I am a proud Retired Lifetime KNEA member and I will not stop being a voice for public schools, the students and my colleagues still in the classroom.

Ruthe Goff,
