Letter to the editor: Respect all state laws

To the editor:

Our mayor, district attorney, chief of police and county sheriff have decided that they will not prosecute a man who decided to identify as a woman, who uses a women’s restroom, locker room or changing room, even though, as of July 1, that will be against Kansas Law! What an example that is setting!

Parents set certain rules for their children. Examples of such are curfews, using the internet, doing homework, household chores, dress codes. Why should our children obey rules that they do not approve of? After all our city and county leaders have announced that they will not follow our state laws.

There is a lot of talk about wanting equity and emotional well-being among the LGBQT+ minority. What about the equity and emotional well-being of those of us who are girls, young women and seasoned female citizens? We do not want to see a man parading around a locker room nude, nor do we want to be dressing, undressing or showering with a man watching. We do not want to deal with toilet seats left up. Modesty is important to us ladies.

If the leaders of Lawrence and Douglas County believe they cannot enforce the law, then they should resign immediately.

Nancy M. Keel,

Lawrence
