Letter to the editor: The spread of hate

To the editor:

When children watch adults do something, they often do the same, especially if it’s something different or unusual. It’s a form of copycatting. Because adults are doing it, it must be OK for children to do it.

The same thing can happen when you elevate copycat behavior to adults. Donald Trump has repeatedly lied, bullied, misrepresented facts, used his position to force his agenda on others, browbeaten, controlled situations to his liking. In other words, manipulated others to do his bidding. Legislators, judges, governors, mayors and others in power have watched this behavior for years. Most have labeled Trump’s behavior as lies, conspiracy and un-American. Something to be wary of. Others have become copycats.

Straighten up, eat your vegetables, smile, don’t lie, don’t bully, don’t be a jerk, think more about others than you do about yourself. Don’t grab for power, don’t eliminate women’s body autonomy, show respect for LGBT+, quit banning books, make voting more accessible, don’t cheat, don’t be a racist. Just because the president does it doesn’t make it right. Be human.

This copycatting occurred before Trump, but sure has grown since he was president. If Trump is president, we will certainly have major problems. Copycatting is contagious; like a snowball rolling downhill, it can get out of control quickly. The will to stop threatening behavior is the responsibility of a democracy. Your vote is the only thing that will stop bullying. It is up to you. Be a part of the solution. Be human.
