Wyandotte County sheriff’s deputy killed in Kansas City standoff

A Wyandotte County sheriff’s deputy is dead and a man is in custody after a standoff in Kansas City, Kansas.

According to a press release from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Deputy Elijah Ming and an officer with the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department arrived at a home in the 2600 block of South 30th Street about 3:30 p.m. Saturday to help a woman move out after she and friends reported being threatened by man with a firearm.

Early reports indicate that shots were fired from inside the residence, striking Ming, as he and the officer approached the door. As responding officers rendered aid to Ming, gunfire was exchanged between law enforcement and a suspect who was barricaded inside the home.

Police negotiated with a man later identified as Shawn Harris, 38, of Kansas City, Kansas, who was also shot in the exchange. Harris left the house, was taken into custody and treated for injuries shortly after 5 p.m. He is currently in “good condition,” at a hospital, the release stated.

Ming was taken a to a hospital, where he died. No other injuries were reported.
