Storm takes out power, damages buildings in Ottawa, but city says no injuries reported Monday night

The National Weather Service and the weather departments of multiple area television stations are reporting that a tornado touched down in Ottawa on Monday evening.

City of Ottawa officials reported late Monday evening that the storm caused structural damage in the community but “most importantly no loss of life or injuries have been reported in Ottawa at this time,” according to a social media post from the city.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning at approximately 7:25 pm. on Monday, with the storm moving west to east in the community, city officials said in the release.

“A majority of the town is without power and streetlights are not working,” the city said in a release posted at about 10:20 p.m. on Monday evening. “For the safety of everyone involved we ask that you remain off the roadways and to stay away from down power lines.”

City officials said they did not have an estimate for when power would be restored.

“Our first priority is life safety,” the city said in the release. “After that the focus will be on structure safety and then utility infrastructure evaluation and restoration.”
