A 34-year-old man was convicted on Tuesday in Douglas County District Court of trying to kill his grandfather last summer by firing multiple bullets into his Lawrence residence.

The defendant, Douglas Adam Speight, was originally charged with attempted first-degree murder in the June 3, 2025, incident, but pleaded no contest Tuesday to attempted voluntary manslaughter with a firearm — a plea agreement that prosecutor Eve Kemple said the grandfather was “happy with.”

As a factual basis for the plea, Kemple told Judge Amy Hanley that Speight was angry at his grandfather that night and went to his Iowa Street residence “intending to kill him.” Kemple said Speight shot into the bedroom of the residence, believing his grandfather to be in that room. She didn’t specify why Speight was angry. At the time, police described Speight’s mood as “extreme anger.”

Multiple neighbors had reported hearing gunshots near the mobile home. At least a dozen rounds were believed to have been fired into the residence, police said. Speight was soon after arrested at his own home after police contacted him on the phone. The grandfather was not injured, they said.

The parties, as part of the plea deal, are recommending that Speight receive 36 months of supervised probation, but his sentence, to be handed down on June 30, will depend on his criminal history score and on findings to be made by Hanley.

The plea agreement also specifies that Speight will be barred from any contact with his grandfather and will have to undergo mental health and alcohol treatment. He also will have to register as a violent offender for 15 years.
