A dog who was involved in a “bizarre” arrest at a Lawrence gas station, as police described it, is recovering at the Lawrence Humane Society, and the suspect who is alleged to have bitten the dog has been prohibited from having animals in the home if he bonds out of jail.

The dog, Smokey, was taken to the Lawrence Humane Society on Wednesday after he was allegedly bitten on the neck and ear by a man, Zion Daniel Eisenhart, 25, of Raytown, Missouri, while Eisenhart was being arrested on suspicion of lewd and lascivious behavior, as the Journal-World reported.

“I can confirm we received the dog and he was examined by our medical team,” said Shannon Wells, executive director of the Humane Society. “He is doing well and, thankfully, does not require hospitalization.”

Police said that during Eisenhart’s arrest Smokey was calm and at no point displayed signs of aggression. Police had confronted Eisenhart after he refused to come out of a bathroom at Casey’s General, 1703 W. Sixth St., where Eisenhart was allegedly naked and performing a sexual act upon himself. Eisenhart was Tased twice before officers could subdue him.

Eisenhart, during the arrest, is alleged to have bitten Smokey and a Lawrence police officer, who needed medical attention for a puncture wound.

Eisenhart was scheduled to appear Thursday — but did not — in Douglas County District Court, where he is charged with one felony count of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, one misdemeanor count of assault on a law enforcement officer, two misdemeanor counts of battery on a law enforcement officer, one misdemeanor count of interference and one misdemeanor count of lewd and lascivious behavior. Police had initially recommended a charge of cruelty to animals according to the jail booking log, but that charge was not listed on Eisenhart’s charging document.

Eisenhart refused to appear in court Thursday. Judge Amy Hanley said that Eisenhart would be called again on Friday but in the meantime, she set a $60,000 cash or surety bond for him. She said that if Eisenhart does post bail, he will not be allowed to have animals in the home during the disposition of the case.

In addition, she ordered that Eisenhart be tested for any infectious diseases after allegedly biting the officer and dog.
