Lawrence police cut the power to a residence early Friday morning before making entry to end a five-and-a-half-hour standoff with a man accused of battery.

Police were called to a home around 11 p.m. Thursday in the 700 block of Ash Street in connection with a man who was accused of battering a person, according to a post from the Lawrence Police Department on social media.

The man, later identified as Isaac Eugene Smith, 52, of Lawrence, refused to let officers in the residence, which started a standoff between the man and law enforcement. Throughout the night police deployed negotiators, the K-9 unit, and several additional resources to try and get the man to exit the home, the post said.

Throughout the standoff, Smith was “combative and threatening,” and police eventually cut the power to the house around 4:30 a.m. and entered the house to arrest Smith. Smith’s alleged victim suffered injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, the post said.

Smith was arrested on suspicion of aggravated battery and criminal threat on a law enforcement officer, both felonies.
