A man is in custody after he is alleged to have taken a vehicle from a Lawrence residence at gunpoint on Tuesday.

Police were called to a residence near 20th and Maple streets around 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday, when a 74-year-old man reported that a man had threatened him with a gun and took his car, according to a post on social media from the Lawrence Police Department.

Officers observed the stolen vehicle about 20 minutes later near 19th Street and Haskell Avenue. They stopped the car, and the driver initially was not compliant but was eventually safely taken into custody, according to the post. A loaded firearm was recovered from the vehicle.

The suspect, Jamie Jeron Collins, 27, has been charged in connection with the incident in Douglas County District Court with one felony count each of aggravated robbery, possession of a firearm by a felon and interference with law enforcement, according to charging documents. Collins’ address in the booking log is listed as the Lawrence Community Shelter, 3655 E. 25th St.

Collins has been on probation since January 2023 with an underlying prison sentence of one year after being convicted of one count of felony flee and elude, one felony count of interference with law enforcement and one misdemeanor count of criminal restraint. His probation was extended in December for another year after he violated his probation terms, according to court records.

Collins has additional convictions in Douglas County for robbery in 2015 and attempted interference with law enforcement in 2019, according to Kansas Department of Corrections records. He is being held without bond.
