Sheriff’s deputies find body in the woods near Clinton Lake; believed to be missing Overland Park man

David Kyle Kempker

After receiving a report from a hiker, Douglas County sheriff’s deputies on Sunday found a dead body at a Clinton Lake park.

The Sheriff’s office believes the remains are of David Kyle Kempker, 53, an Overland Park man who was reported missing last week.

A hiker walking a trail off of Clinton Overlook Park around 5:40 p.m. Sunday called dispatchers when he believed he saw a person in a heavily wooded area nearby. Deputies were unable to see anything from the trail, but once they entered the wooded area, they located a deceased person who matched the description of Kempker. Deputies notified his family members Sunday evening.

Deputies had searched Clinton State Park extensively last week for Kempker after locating his vehicle in the park on March 20 about 24 hours after he was reported missing to Overland Park police. The nature of the report was to check his welfare.

A spokesman for the Sheriff’s office said the investigation into Kempker’s death is ongoing, and that a coroner’s report is pending.
