South Dakota man arrested after police chase in Lawrence

A South Dakota man was arrested early Thursday morning after a car chase through Lawrence in which a deputy had to nudge the fleeing car with a patrol vehicle to stop it.

Douglas County sheriff’s deputies were called to assist Lawrence police officers around 1:45 a.m. after a pursuit began in North Lawrence, said George Diepenbrock, a spokesman with the sheriff’s office. The fleeing vehicle, a white Nissan Maxima, went south across the Kansas River Bridge and turned west on Sixth Street. Diepenbrock said the chase ended when a deputy performed a tactical vehicle intervention to stop the suspect’s vehicle in the 2500 block of West Sixth Street.

A tactical vehicle intervention is a maneuver where a law enforcement officer nudges the rear side panel of a suspect’s car with their vehicle in an effort to spin the car out and stop it.

The suspect, Dominique Ray Balleard, 35, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was booked into the Douglas County Jail on suspicion of fleeing and eluding, DUI, drug possession and for outstanding warrants in South Dakota; the nature of the warrants wasn’t immediately available on Thursday. His bond amount for just the Douglas County incident is set at $10,000, but because of the South Dakota warrants, he is currently being held without bond.

Balleard is next scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 10.
