A Franklin County man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his month-old baby son.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jason P. Marnell, 24, of Richmond, Wednesday evening. The arrest — pursuant to a warrant for first-degree murder and abuse of a child — occurred during a traffic stop near U.S. Highway 59 and Clark Road north of Richmond, according to a news release Thursday from the KBI.

On the morning of Jan. 14, Franklin County sheriff’s deputies responded to a medical call at 304 E. Central St. in Richmond. Upon arrival they found an unresponsive infant. Life-saving measures were attempted and the baby was taken to an Ottawa hospital, according to the release. The infant was later identified as 1-month-old Waylon S. Marnell.

Waylon was later transferred to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, in critical condition. On Jan. 28, Waylon was removed from life support, and he died around 3 p.m.

Jason Marnell was booked into the Franklin County Jail, where he is being held on a $500,000 bond. The investigation is ongoing.
