A man who was acquitted in the shooting death of a 14-year-old Lawrence boy has filed to have his arrest and court records expunged.

The man, Derrick Del Reed, 19, filed to expunge the arrest records and charging records on Aug. 5. If the court grants the expungement, records of his arrest in connection with the charge will be removed from Douglas County jail records and any publicly available records will also be removed from the state’s online database.

The expungement hearing is scheduled for Oct. 16.

Reed had been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the March 18, 2023, death of 14-year-old Kamarjay Shaw near Reed’s then-residence in the 1300 block of Maple Lane. Reed, who was 17 at the time of the shooting, had initially asked the court for immunity from prosecution, arguing that he had acted in self-defense, but the court denied that, and Reed was tried as an adult, as the Journal-World reported.

At trial, Reed’s attorney, Mark Hartman, cast doubt on whether Reed pulled the trigger and said that evidence suggested that another man on the scene, Owen Walker, 19, of Lawrence, may have been the real shooter. Detectives had questioned Walker the night of the shooting and ruled him out as a suspect. Walker was later charged with felony obstruction in connection with the case and is currently wanted by Lawrence police.

Reed was found not guilty by a Douglas County jury on March 13 of this year.
