A Topeka man who was allegedly armed with multiple machetes is accused of pinning a woman to the ground and holding a knife to her neck.

The man, Michael David Jenkins, 39, is charged in Douglas County District Court with one felony count of aggravated battery and one felony count of criminal threat, according to charging documents.

Jenkins was arrested just after 1 a.m. Tuesday at Empire Bar and Billiards, 925 Iowa St., after police were called to the area for a disturbance with weapons, said Sgt. Drew Fennelly with the Lawrence Police Department.

Witnesses called 911 to report that a man had pinned a woman to the ground outside of the bar and held a knife to her throat, Fennelly said. When police arrived they located Jenkins, and he was carrying multiple sheathed machetes, Fennelly said. Jenkins initially did not comply with officer commands, but police were able to take Jenkins into custody without any additional incident, Fennelly said.

The victim, a 22-year-old woman, was located outside the bar with multiple small lacerations and was seen by medics but did not require further medical attention, Fennelly said. The altercation between Jenkins and the woman allegedly began over money before turning physical.

Jenkins is being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday afternoon. Jenkins was convicted of felony aggravated assault in Shawnee County in 2013, according court records.
