Lawrence police say several acts of vandalism occurred last week in North Lawrence, in addition to the damage done to a bus stop that was decorated with Indigenous art.

Police believe that more than a dozen car windows were smashed on Friday night, with no thefts being reported in connection with the damage, according to a social media post from the Lawrence Police Department. Police also received a report that night about an “expensive piece of work equipment” with a value of a couple of thousand dollars that was damaged. A witness saw two men with what appeared to be a bat or a hammer after hearing glass breaking, the post said.

More glass was smashed at a bus stop decorated with Indigenous art called “White Buffalo” by Iris Cliff, which was one of 10 bus stops decorated by local artists, as the Journal-World reported. Police said the value of the bus stop repairs could be as much as $5,000.

The process to repair the bus stop and replace the art is already underway, said Felice Lavergne with Lawrence Transit in an email to the Journal-World.

“The art is an application of a vinyl sticker and can be reprinted and reinstalled on the new glass. It has been and will continue to be Transit’s policy to repair and replace all artwork as damage occurs,” Lavergne said.

Transit has ordered new glass and is in the process of having the new vinyl stickers printed, but if temperatures are too low for sticker application, the reinstallation of the art may be delayed, Lavergne said.
