He was ordered to stand trial on two counts of second-degree attempted murder for allegedly grabbing the steering wheel of a van he was a passenger in and trying to crash it after threatening to kill the driver.

A man was ordered on Thursday in Douglas County District Court to stand trial for attempted murder for allegedly trying to crash a van he was a passenger in. The order came after a two-part hearing at which a witness indicated she had been untruthful to police about what happened.

The man, Jayce Tyler Ingham, 36, of Iola, is facing two felony counts of intentional attempted murder in the second degree and a misdemeanor count of criminal damage, according to charging documents.

The charges relate to an incident on Dec. 2, 2022, near the intersection of Clinton Parkway and Crestline Drive around 7:50 p.m. when Ingham is alleged to have pulled the wheel of a moving vehicle that he was a passenger in in an attempt to kill the other people in the car, one of whom was a 17-year-old boy, as the Journal-World reported.

At the first part of the hearing on May 8, Chief Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Tatum asked the witness if she told dispatchers and police the truth the day of the incident. The woman said, “yes,” she was truthful with the dispatcher, but she said, “no,” she may not have been truthful with police, which prompted the court to appoint the woman an attorney, Cooper Overstreet.

Tatum asked again on Thursday if the woman was truthful with police the day of the incident. The woman said that she did tell police Ingham threatened to kill her the day of the incident.

“I told them (police) he was yelling about trying to kill me but I know he wouldn’t. I know he’s never going to hurt me. He never has and he never will,” the woman said.

The woman testified that she and Ingham had been arguing all day and at some point during the drive from Iola to Lawrence Ingham had kicked out the back window of the van before the argument came to a boiling point and Ingham grabbed the wheel.

“He grabbed the wheel and I slammed on my brakes,” she said.

Tatum asked if she feared for her life at that moment. The woman said she was afraid for herself, her son in the car and for Ingham.

The son testified at the May 8 hearing that Ingham was so drunk the day of the incident that the boy had to walk Ingham to a bathroom because Ingham could barely stand. A Lawrence police officer testified that when he arrived the van was stopped in the middle of the intersection and was pointed directly at a large stoplight pole. Ingham first told the officer to leave him alone, that he was napping in the back of the van while the woman and the boy were outside the van.

Ingham is scheduled for trial on Aug. 21. He has been in custody on a $60,000 bond since his arrest.
