A Topeka man is back in custody in Douglas County on charges of kidnapping a woman and carrying a sawed-off shotgun, among other charges.
Martyne Christopher Elmer, 55, faces one count of kidnapping, one count of carrying a shotgun with a barrel less than 18 inches and one count of a felon carrying a firearm, all felonies, according to charging documents. He is also charged with misdemeanor domestic battery, misdemeanor driving while suspended and no proof of insurance. The incident is alleged to have occurred on Dec. 18, 2022.
The charges were first filed against Elmer on March 10 of this year, and he was scheduled to appear in court on June 9 for a preliminary hearing. Elmer failed to appear at that hearing after posting a $50,000 surety bond on May 21, according to court records. Judge Sally Pokorny then issued Elmer an arrest warrant and set bond at $100,000.
In a separate case he was taken into custody in Jackson County, Kansas, on June 1, eight days before his scheduled hearing in Douglas County, in connection with multiple burglaries and thefts at a property on 110th Road in southern Jackson County, according to a news release from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. Court records indicate that he pleaded guilty to one felony count of burglary on June 15 in connection with that arrest.
Elmer was brought to Douglas County on Saturday and is being held on a $100,000 bond. He is next scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
Elmer’s Douglas County charge for possession of a firearm by a felon cites a felony conviction in Jackson County, Oregon. Elmer has felony convictions in Oregon for violating a protection order and burglary, according to court records.
