A man whose address is listed as the city-support site for the homeless has been charged with felony assault after allegedly threatening two people with an ax on Saturday.
The man, Brandon Eugene Snow, 32, is charged in Douglas County District Court with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, namely a double-sided hatchet or ax, according to the charging document.
A 72-year-old man and a 66-year-old woman were walking near the campsite on the levee sometime before 7 a.m. on Saturday when a man, later identified as Snow, began chasing them from inside the camp while carrying an ax, said Sgt. Drew Fennelly with the Lawrence Police Department.
The couple ran from the man to North 2nd Street to get help. Police arrived shortly thereafter but were initially unable to locate Snow. No injuries were reported, Fennelly said.
Snow was later located and arrested. He allegedly told police that he was upset that the man and woman were taking photographs of the camp, but he denied ever threatening anyone with an ax, Fennelly said.
Snow was arrested at the city-support campsite around 11 a.m. Saturday. During his first appearance in court on Monday, he was given a $4,000 own-recognizance bond, meaning he was not required to pay any money to be released from jail but may be charged that amount if he fails to appear in court. He is next scheduled to appear on Aug. 22, according to court records.
