A Lawrence man accused of engaging in an armed standoff with police earlier this week was charged Wednesday in Douglas County District Court with one felony count of aggravated assault with a firearm and one felony count of aggravated burglary.

The man, Shawn Anthony Daniels, 41, was arrested around 2 a.m. Tuesday after a nine-hour standoff at the Naismith Place apartment complex in the 1500 block of West 25th Court, as the Journal-World previously reported. Police said Daniels had barricaded himself in an apartment after reportedly threatening others in the complex with a gun. The incident led to residents in nearby apartments being evacuated for the evening.

Judge Amy Hanley on Wednesday set a $100,000 cash or surety bond for Daniels, who appeared via Zoom through the window of a cell at the Douglas County Jail. She said that if Daniels were to be released he would be subject to GPS monitoring. She said he posed a significant risk to public safety as his alleged crimes involved three individuals and a firearm.

Hanley said Daniels had been uncooperative with the jail staff and had not filed a financial affidavit before his court appearance to determine whether he was eligible for a court-appointed attorney.

Daniels was inaudible when trying to speak from the jail, said Hanley, who then asked Daniels’ brother, who was in the courtroom, to speak on Daniels’ behalf regarding his financial status. The brother said Daniels was on disability and unemployed, that he has a bad memory and difficulty reading and writing English. He said Daniels had not been “speaking in right sentences” for a few months.

Hanley appointed Angela Keck to represent Daniels, who is next scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 1 for a status conference.
