Lawrence police locked down a central Lawrence apartment complex for nearly nine hours Monday night during a standoff with a man who allegedly threatened multiple people with a gun.

Police responded around 5:20 p.m. Monday to the 1500 block of West 25th Court for reports of a disturbance involving a firearm, said Sgt. Drew Fennelly with the Lawrence Police Department. When police arrived, officers set a perimeter around the Naismith Place apartment complex and evacuated residents from nearby apartments.

Throughout the evening police attempted to make contact with Daniels, who had barricaded himself inside an apartment, but police were unable to effectively communicate with him, Fennelly said. Later in the evening, Crisis Response Team negotiators made contact with Daniels using a specialized robot, but Daniels refused to comply with orders to surrender, Fennelly said.

Police also deployed multiple unoccupied aerial vehicles, or drones, to survey the area, and they deployed a patrol service dog during the standoff. Around 9 p.m. an armored patrol vehicle was seen speeding onto the scene.

Around 2 a.m., Crisis Response Team members entered the room where Daniels was and took him into custody without further incident, Fennelly said. Daniels refused medical treatment from Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crews, and he was taken to the jail. Police found a firearm while searching the residence, Fennelly said. No injuries were reported.

Lawrence Police Chief Rich Lockhart commended his officers for taking Daniels into custody without anyone in the area getting hurt.

“This was a great example of utilizing all available de-escalation tools at our disposal to find a peaceful resolution to a dangerous situation, and I am extremely proud of our people and how they conducted themselves to keep our community safe and secure,” Lockhart said in a statement.

Fennelly said that police have filed an affidavit with the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office for charging consideration, but charges had yet to be filed as of Tuesday evening.
